What are product groups?
A product group is a grouping of products that are related to each other. For example, it could be all chairs in a group named "Chairs"; other groups could be outdoor furniture, t-shirts, and many others.
Product groups are not quite the same as categories, which are often used on webshops. Product groups are intended to be a simpler division of products into fewer groups and without hierarchy.
A category can be a more detailed division of products and with many levels of hierarchy.
Product groups and ERP
Product groups often have their base in the ERP system where they can be used to filter products. It is also a popular way to reduce the price of a product group via a campaign.
Indexed PIM and Business Central or Navision
Products imported from BC/Navision (ERP) are also placed as product groups in PIM. On these product groups, you can set a group of products to a lower price as a timed campaign via price rules.
These price rules can often be set up in the ERP, but they can also be created in Indexed PIM.
Product groups and WooCommerce
WooCommerce does not have support for product groups; instead, categories are used, which Indexed PIM also supports.
If a simple division of products is desired, categories can therefore be used advantageously for this purpose.
